Book Reviews📚 | Thriller – Psychological

Some books you read; others you inhabit. The Skeleton Key by Erin Kelly is a modern Gothic labyrinth — a story that blurs the line between a fictional treasure hunt and a real-life obsession.

As a true bibliophile, any story that involves books captures my attention. No wonder the premise of The Skeleton Key, with a creative idea for a book that, upon having been published, changes the lives of not only those involved forever, immediately grabbed me.

The Story

A childhood favourite of the author, Masquerade, a treasure hunt picture book by Kit Williams, inspired the novel. But if you think this is ‘just’ an intriguing story about a puzzle and a prize to win, you are wrong. It is about so much more: friendship and family,  love and trust, about being recognised for who you are, and the darkly Gothic secrets spanning a lifetime. About skeletons in the cupboard — I simply had to use that phrase.

On the Shelf

The cover of The Skeleton Key is a work of art — an intricate tree of bone and roses that perfectly mirrors the bohemian Gothic heart of the story. Seeing it resting here on the desk, it feels like an invitation to a hunt that never quite ended. It belongs in The Folio Collection because it’s a book that demands to be held.

The Verdict

To discover a novel inspired by a treasure hunt tradition I had never heard of was a revelation. I was completely enthralled by the intricate puzzle Erin Kelly built; it is the kind of storytelling that leaves you hungry to dive straight into the author’s next book!

The Folio Collection ⚜️

The Folio Collection is our personal Hall of Fame — the heart of our library. While our ratings celebrate the craft and narrative of many great books, this collection is reserved for the stories that sparked a deeper connection; the books we wished would never end. These are our “desert island” picks; the stories where the atmosphere, the characters, or the prose felt like they were written just for us. They resonate with us not just through brilliance, but through a certain soul and presence. They may not always be perfect, but they are the ones we fell in love with.
