Enormous fun: Brilliantly plotted, witty, and engaging — a masterclass in socially conscious crime writing

A quirky, humorous, and cleverly written detective series that doesn’t shy away from contemporary and social issues; all the more praise for Charlotte Vassell in these hectic and polarising times. I was enticed and just couldn’t stop reading, and finished all three books one after another – rooting for the characters, despising others, and wishing some wouldn’t hurt people I’d grown to love.

At Newcastle Noir some years ago, crime writer and poet Michael J. Malone spoke on a panel about the social responsibility of authors. It was a lightbulb moment for me; while crime writing is entertaining, it can also paint a picture that makes you realise what is happening in our contemporary world. Charlotte Vassell does exactly this, weaving cultural history and sharp awareness into every chapter.

Caius Beauchamp: A Detective Out of Step with the “In Crowd”

I was smitten and uber excited to have found this witty and addictive mystery series about an Irish-Jamaican DI, whose family history makes him unhappy with his last name; he stubbornly pronounces it the French, phonetic way.

As it happens, Caius Beauchamp is drawn into the world of the upper class — a world he isn’t comfortable with and would rather not live in. Yet, case after case, work inevitably draws him into these exclusive circles, where his principles and his identity clash with the dark reality of those aristocrats and their privileges.

The Other Half

In this brilliant series opener, the clash between Caius’s principles and the world of inherited wealth is ignited. When the girlfriend of a namesake — this time pronounced as the traditional “Beecham” — is found murdered, Caius is dragged into the heart of the London elite. It’s a world of “socialites galore,” and oh boy, those aristocrats and their privileges…

What makes The Other Half so compelling isn’t just the mystery, but the introduction of Caius’s team: DS Matthew (Matt) Cheung and DC Amy Noakes. Seeing how they watch each other’s backs, both personally and professionally, creates an emotional anchor that carries through the entire trilogy.

The In Crowd

If The Other Half was the introduction, The In Crowd is the masterclass. It is no wonder Charlotte Vassell won the Mystery Writers of America 2025 Edgar Award for Best Novel for this instalment. The stakes are higher, and the “High-Society Noir” vibe is at its peak.

n this story, the “In Crowd” isn’t just a social circle—it’s a dangerous web of influence. We see the team — Caius, DS Matt Cheung, and DC Amy Noakes—truly evolve as their personal lives and professional cases begin to overlap. The subtle manipulation and psychological mind games become as important as the “whodunit,” drawing you in and making you realise just how contemporary these issues really are.

A Deadly Inheritance

The series concludes — for now! — with A Deadly Inheritance, where the “High-Society Noir” vibe reaches a fever pitch. This is where Charlotte Vassell’s awareness of cultural history and contemporary consequences really shines. As I mentioned regarding the Newcastle Noir panel, this story proves that crime writing can be both immensely enjoyable and a mirror to the power structures of our contemporary world.

Seeing Caius, DS Matt Cheung, and DC Amy Noakes watch each other’s backs as their personal and professional lives collide makes for a truly moving experience. The (not so) subtle manipulation, particularly from characters like the intriguing Rt Honourable Lord Arthur Hampton, MP, is as important as the age-old “whodunit.” It draws you in and raises awareness of how to stay true to your moral self in the face of absolute privilege.

On the Shelf

Our featured banner captures the “High-Society Noir” essence of this series perfectly—where the polish of the upper classes hides the rot of greed and addiction. Having all three books in the series on our own shelf is a real treat; their bold, colourful covers are a standout in any modern detective collection and add a sophisticated, gritty edge to the room.

The Verdict

While I have a few minor “pet peeves” — primarily the occasional “head-hopping” within scenes and a slight over-reliance on repeating character names — these did not stop me from immensely enjoying the journey. The psychological depth and the bond between Caius, DS Matt Cheung, and DC Amy Noakes make this a series we simply couldn’t put down. In fact, we are eagerly awaiting book four!

The Caius Beauchamp series is a masterclass in witty, socially conscious crime writing. A wonderful addition to The Folio Collection.
