Book Reviews📚 | Historical Fiction

A remarkable tale of perseverance and commitment—set against the turbulent heart of early 20th-century Ireland.

I relished this immersive tale of love and the struggle for a better future. Set against the Irish turmoil and the social inequality of Dublin’s inhabitants — from the well-to-do to those dependent on food banks — it is impossible not to root for Maggie. She is a strong, stubborn protagonist, though her journey serves as a poignant reminder to be careful when imposing our final wishes upon others; we rarely realise the lasting impact they may have.

The Story

Denise Deegan paints a vivid image of a city on the brink. Set against the historical 1913 Lockout, World War I, and the Easter Rising, the novel follows Maggie as she fights to fulfil her father’s dying wish for her education.

We see the world through the eyes of Maggie and her friends, Daniel and Michael, both of whom are torn between their fathers’ beliefs and their own emerging identities. As the situation in Dublin escalates, the characters are forced to make decisions that will define them forever. Deegan’s writing is so evocative you can almost envision Maggie cycling through the Dublin streets.

On the Shelf

The cover of Through the Barricades is particularly special — did you know the determined-looking woman featured is actually the author’s daughter? Seeing it here on the shelf, it stands as a tribute to the power of education and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a book that carries the weight of history in its pages and looks perfectly at home in a collection dedicated to stories with heart.

The Verdict

If you love Irish history and want to experience it “true-to-life” through the eyes of characters you truly care for, this is the book for you. I was struck by the silence of Maggie’s mother and the unintended pressure of her father’s legacy, making this much more than “just” a historical romance. It is a remarkable tale of courage and perseverance. Of fighting for justice.
